Humans possess an innate drive to forage for meaning, drawn naturally toward the edge. On Cortes Island, that search often leads to the coastline—the living threshold where land meets sea. At the tideline, where currents shift and horizons open, curiosity awakens. By navigating the ocean’s ancient pulse or listening to the forest’s quiet wisdom, we discover the edge is not a drop-off but a place of becoming. Through ecology, connection to place, and embodied practice, uncertainty transforms into relationship—a felt connection with the animate earth that teaches us to move with care and purpose.
For more than 40 years, people have gathered at Hollyhock Leadership and Retreat Centre to explore personal growth, wellbeing, creativity, and social innovation. Here, learning unfolds by deepening relationships—with ourselves, with each other, and with the natural world.

The natural world is not incidental to the experience; it is foundational. Our 48-acre campus is permanently protected through conservation covenants with The Land Conservancy of British Columbia, safeguarding its ecological integrity for generations. The mature forest connects to a broader network of conserved lands on southern Cortes Island, supporting black-tailed deer, cougar, and coastal wolf.
Choosing to protect the land reflects a core belief: nature is not a backdrop — it is our most powerful teacher. Intact landscapes reveal interdependence, cycles of growth and rest, and our place within larger systems. In this context, leadership is not about control, but connection.
In a time of urgency and relentless pace, slowing down to remember our relationship with the living world is not indulgence — it is essential. Nature restores attention, renews energy, and reminds us that clarity often emerges when we return to what is alive around us.
