Compass Adventures: A Comox Valley water sports legacy

Riding the waves for 30 years

For over three decades, a small family-run business in the heart of the Comox Valley has been making waves—literally and figuratively. From the calm waters of the Comox Marina to the open stretches of the Salish Sea, Compass Adventures has introduced generations of locals and visitors alike to the thrill and joy of water sports.

Where it all began

Back in the mid-1990s, the Robinson family launched their humble operation with a single goal: to make water sports accessible, safe, and, above all, fun for everyone. What started with a few sailboats and a Rec Centre program quickly grew into a full-fledged business offering a sailing academy, rentals, lessons, and tours.

“We didn’t set out to build a business empire,” says Stuart, who still runs the day-to-day operations with his brother, Andrew. “We just wanted to share our love of the ocean and beach culture with the community.”

A community anchor

Over the years, the business has become more than just a place to rent a paddleboard—it’s a cornerstone of the community. The Compass team have worked with local schools, offered community events, and even trained young athletes who’ve gone on to compete at national levels.

“Our mission has always been about accessibility,” says Stuart. “Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned sailor, we make sure everyone feels welcome and safe.”

Keeping it fun and friendly

Part of what sets this family-run business apart is the atmosphere. Walk into their marina rental shop and you’re greeted with the smell of salt air, the sound of laughter, and staff who treat you like part of the Compass Adventure family.

Looking to the future

Now in their 30th year, the family has no plans of slowing down. With a deep respect for the environment, Compass has started incorporating eco-friendly practices—offering biodegradable sunscreen, reducing plastic waste, and educating guests on marine conservation.

They’re also excited to be launching our new RC sailboat learning for all ages, and a 40-foot sailing catamaran tour this summer/fall.

“We’re stewards of these waters,” says Robinson. “And we want to make sure future generations can enjoy them just as much as we have.”

A lasting impact

For many in the Comox Valley, this business is more than just a place to learn to sail or rent paddleboards—it’s a place where memories are made. It’s a place where beach culture is woven into the fabric of life by the water.

So next time you’re in the Valley and feel the call of the ocean, know that there’s a family ready to welcome you aboard—with a smile, a paddle, a sail, and 30 years of stories to share.
