UofQ is a beautiful blend of education and entertainment

More than a lecture series

The “University of Quadra”—fondly referred to as UofQ—is a weekly lecture series at the Heriot Bay Inn Pub. It is a celebration of Quadra’s vibrant local knowledge and lively community spirit, and provides a healthy dose of cerebral stimulus in the colder months.

This long-running event allows islanders to share their passions—from chainsaws and bonsai to canning, preserves, screen-printing, cannabis cuisine, and more.

Founded by Heriot Bay Inn custodian Tracy Sinclair and friend of the Inn JD Waibel, UofQ was designed for locals to share their wild stories and treasured skills. Guest “professors” teach hands-on, offbeat, and engaging topics with a presentation followed by a Q&A.

“UofQ is more than a lecture series—it’s a creative outlet, social, and showcase of island life.”

More than pub nights at Heriot Bay

Talks are held in the cozy Heriot Bay Inn Pub, a “campus” where hearty pub fare and sea views set the scene. The Inn is a year-round community hub, hosting everything from live music and karaoke to bingo and open mic nights, so UofQ fits naturally into its flourishing event calendar. Attendance for some sessions has rivalled some of the best Friday night dances.

The season builds towards a playful “prom” where “graduates” don themed attire and dance in honour of knowledge, camaraderie, and fun.

UofQ is more than a lecture series—it’s a creative outlet, social, and showcase of island life. So many people who gather here have hidden talents and fascinating interests.

The evening fosters connection between Quadra Island old-timers, newcomers, and visitors, sharing meals, adventures and ideas, and times had. Talks might unveil a side of someone or a chapter in their life that might not be shared otherwise, despite it often being so fabulous that it should be shouted from the rooftops. A historical neighbourhood pub is a fitting place for animatedly sharing a good tale or a great project. It preserves and amplifies the island’s unique stories, skills, and history.

The weekly lecture series runs on Tuesday nights from October through May, offering a season-long schedule of diverse, community-driven topics. No topic is off-limits—from woodworking to horticulture to culinary arts to “How to be a Wingman” to DIY arts & crafts. You never know what you’re going to learn. Make a night of it—come early, grab your seat, and enjoy a delicious dinner before the talk begins!
