Amid echoing laughter and the rhythmic clacks of paddles, a phenomenon is growing in our communities. For pickleball’s many enthusiasts, it’s not just a sport, but a celebration of life itself.
A newcomer’s journey into Pickleball
At 62 years old, I’m just getting started in the courts of life—particularly those lined with pickleball nets. I discovered the game just three short years ago. I’d recently moved to the Comox Valley, and the only faces I knew were those of my niece, her husband, and their little one. After I tried pickleball one day, it quickly became the foundation of my social world, transforming Cumberland from a mere location to a community filled with a vibrant cast of characters.
Pickleball is an unpretentious, easy activity to get into. The courts are great melting pots, welcoming anyone with an ounce of curiosity and a pair of sneakers. As an A-type personality, I was initially drawn to the sport’s competitive edge, yet I’ve realized I’m equally fond of its capacity for lighthearted joy and shared laughter.
Why pickleball is gaining popularity
Why does pickleball resonate with so many? I think there’s a perfect storm of reasons: the pleasure of staying physically active without the crushing weight of high barriers to entry; the elation of besting an opponent—matched only by the satisfaction of seeing them do the same; and the delight of connecting with other humans and sharing stories, lives, and the love of sport.
With more and more families taking to the courts, pickleball is no longer seen as a pastime for old people. The courts are now full of enthusiasts of all ages, including youngsters like 17-year-old world champion Anna Leigh Waters, who are, quite literally, shaping the future of the game.

For many of us, pickleball is more than just a sport; it’s a lifestyle. For me, it’s been a pathway to staying fit, forging friendships, and constantly pushing my limits. It’s a game that brings people together.
