MCCLINTOCK’S BUFFALO YOGURT

When Sandra McClintock wanted to build a cottage dairy at the family farm, there was too much business uncertainty. Instead, she took the advice to start a water buffalo dairy. Now, with several water buffalo dairies meeting Vancouver Island’s demand, Sandra has launched a cottage dairy: McClintock’s Water Buffalo Yogurt.

“The milk is high in proteins, milk solids, and healthy fats. Perfect for a lovely, mild Greek-style yogurt!” Natural Pastures Cheese Factory had been buying Sandra’s milk for their award-winning Buffalo mozzarella. They’d also done some test batches of yogurt. Sandra is now contracting with Natural Pastures to make the yogurt, marketing the product as McClintock’s Buffalo Yogurt. “They’re known as an award-winning cheese producer. It made sense for us to have a distinct brand.”

McClintock’s Buffalo Yogurt is available at Edible Island, Seeds Market in Cumberland, Natural Pastures in Courtenay, Island Bison farm store in Black Creek, and Springford farm store in Nanoose. You can also find it at on Saturdays at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market.

Sandra emphasizes the “super importance” of the Market. “We’re able to give samples so people can try it. It’s not at all what they expect. When they try it, they like it!”
