Nestled on the waterfront in the heart of Comox, Filberg Park is one of Vancouver Island’s most cherished green spaces. Spanning nine acres of oceanfront property, the Park is home to heritage gardens, mature trees, winding paths, and breathtaking views of the Comox Harbour and Comox Glacier.
Filberg is no ordinary park. It’s a flourishing legacy—lovingly maintained and stewarded by the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association (FHLPA) in partnership with the Town of Comox Parks Department, whose tireless work on the gardens and grounds ensures this historical treasure remains as vibrant today as it was nearly a century ago.
“From cheerful spring tulips to late-summer perennials, the gardens offer a rotating display of colour, scent, and natural artistry”
Cultivated beauty: 36 garden beds of West Coast wonder
At the heart of the Park’s charm are 36 distinct garden beds, each with its own unique design and seasonal highlights. From the cheerful tulips and daffodils that usher in spring to the rich textures of late-summer perennials and ornamental grasses, the gardens offer a rotating display of colour, scent, and natural artistry.
The gardens are intentionally diverse, blending heritage plantings with sustainable, pollinator-friendly choices. Special features include selections from the Greig Rhododendron Collection and Harry Wright Rhododendron Collection, both of which explode into bloom in the spring, painting the grounds in vibrant pinks, purples, and creams.

With help from local horticulturists, volunteers, and Town staff, the Park’s planting plans emphasize biodiversity, low water usage, and year-round interest. It’s a place where every season tells a new story.
Thank you to the Town of Comox Parks Department
Much of the magic visitors experience at Filberg Park is thanks to the Town of Comox Parks Department. Their skilled team handles everything from maintaining lawns and walking paths to nurturing garden beds and supporting long-term improvements across
the grounds.
“The Filberg Lodge is a living museum with hand-carved wood details, original furnishings, and views that haven’t changed in generations”
The Town’s collaboration with the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association ensures that the property remains not only beautiful but also functional, safe, and ecologically sound. The seamless partnership between the Town and FHLPA is a model for how municipal and community groups can work together to preserve public heritage spaces.

The Filberg Lodge: A home with a heart
At the centre of the Park stands the Filberg Lodge, a striking example of Arts and Crafts architecture completed in the 1930s. Once the summer home of industrialist R.J. Filberg, the Lodge is a living museum that offers a glimpse into Vancouver Island’s past—complete with hand-carved wood details, original furnishings, and views that haven’t changed in generations.
“Trees like Garry oaks, giant sequoias, and Japanese maples line the pathways and frame the garden spaces, giving visitors a sense of place and permanence”
Open for tours during special events and select weekends, the Lodge connects visitors to the legacy of the Filberg family, whose vision and philanthropy shaped the property’s early years. Today, the Lodge is used for educational tours and a gift shop, making it a meaningful part of the Park’s ongoing story.

A living arboretum and green roof garden
Filberg Park is also home to a growing arboretum—a curated collection of both native and ornamental trees that offer structure, shade, and a unique educational element. Trees like Garry oaks, giant sequoias, and Japanese maples line the pathways and frame the garden spaces, giving visitors a sense of place and permanence.

The small pump house between Gate 2 and Gate 3 is a quiet but impactful example of eco-conscious design. Its specially constructed roof has a thick rubber membrane lining topped with several inches of soil, which permits a fabulous living rooftop display.
A garden that builds community
Whether you’re attending the renowned Filberg Festival, getting married, or enjoying a quiet picnic by the sea, Filberg Park brings people together. The commitment of the FHLPA and its volunteers, along with support from the Town of Comox, ensures that the gardens and grounds serve as a welcoming community space—alive with history, culture, and natural beauty.
