The lively residents of Berwick by the Sea are proof that life doesn’t need to slow down at 80, 90, or even 100! This retirement community proves that fulfillment in later years is more than possible: adventure, friendship, and discovery are at the core of life here.
As you step into the picturesque building in Campbell River’s downtown, warm smiles greet you, screens showcase photographs of recent excursions, a grand piano hints at evening serenades, and an impressive printed schedule of daily activities catches the eye. It’s all set to the spectacular backdrop of the Discovery Passage.
“It’s more than just a ride to the beach — it’s a shared experience that builds connection with others, nature, and the local landscape.”
Active living at every age
The Active Living program is the beating heart of Berwick by the Sea, and residents are empowered far beyond their perceived limitations. There are frequent, inclusive bus outings to Island destinations: Parksville Beach, Elk Falls Provincial Park, and Quadra Island’s Rebecca Spit, to name a few. The guided trips give attendees the comfort and strength to try something new, venture a little farther from home, and maybe step a bit outside of their personal comfort zone.

“It’s more than just a ride to the beach — it’s a shared experience that builds connection with others, nature, and the local landscape,” says Pat Palmer, Active Living Manager at Berwick by the Sea, of the Rebecca Spit trip. It may not be a formal tour, but the role of the Active Living Coordinator during the excursion closely mirrors the skills and spirit of interpretive guiding—making nature meaningful, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.
“I’ve lived here for a long time, and I’ve been going to Rebecca Spit for years. I love it because it is quiet and calm.”
Life inside Berwick by the Sea
Activities on a recent Rebecca Spit adventure included a picnic lunch, beachcombing, informal talks about local flora and fauna, photography, and simply stopping to appreciate the views. “I’ve lived here for a long time, and I’ve been going to Rebecca Spit for years. I love it because it is quiet and calm. I enjoy all of the outings; it gives me a chance to go to these places since I don’t have a car anymore,” says resident Ruth Ott (92).

Back at Berwick by the Sea, daily classes, including Gentle Kickboxing and Morning Movement, encourage residents to maintain strength for the many adventures available to them. Evening movies, happy hours, craft sessions, themed dinners and socials, and just about any board or card game you could think of provide on-site entertainment. Come winter, there’s an uptick of cozier happenings, such as choir performances in the Fireside Lounge.
Despite the full schedule, residents’ energy for fulfillment extends to fundraising for various local charities and causes—finding purpose in community involvement and helping others.
If you feel like you could use a little more adventure and connection in your life, come and visit Berwick by the Sea and find out what it means to live a life full of possibility.
